Meetings now twice a month

By popular demand, we will be increasing the frequency of our meetings to twice monthly. Meetings will now take place (unless otherwise advertised) on the second and fourth Monday of every month.

To cover the increased administrative costs, we are introducing a small charge. Everyone attending meetings will be asked to contribute RMB20, or RMB10 for students/ pensioners/ unwaged. (This will be done on a trust basis- no ID will be requested!)

Meetings will continue to be held at Zarah, from 7.30 to 9.30pm.

Dates of meetings for the rest of 2016:

10 October

24 October

14 November

28 November

12 December

(No meeting on December 26!)

BWN Meeting Tuesday 12th April

The next meeting of Beijing Writers’ Network will take place on Tuesday 12th April, from 7.30-9.30pm, at Zarah.

We will be sharing our work and offering each other constructive but robust feedback. If you are interested in creative writing you are very welcome to drop by, to meet other writers or just to see what it’s like; there is no need to book. However if you would like to have your work critiqued please email andy@beijingwriters.com, or contact AndyKilleen on WeChat. (Depending on numbers, it may not be possible for everyone to get feedback. Anyone who misses out will be given priority at the next meeting.)

Huffington Post brags about not paying its writers!

We all know it’s hard to make a living from writing, but it still comes as a shock when one of the biggest names on the internet announces not only that it doesn’t pay its writers, but that it takes pride in not doing so. Huffington Post is owned by Verizon, which makes a billion dollars a month in profits, but won’t pay its writers because to do so would not be “authentic”.

I tried this argument at the supermarket (“I’d love to pay for my groceries, but it wouldn’t be an authentic shopping experience if I did.”) Oddly enough they weren’t very happy and insisted on being paid in cash. So I’m going to join with Chuck Wendig in urging writers to think very hard before writing for Huffington Post, or even before reading it or linking to it.
